England took a massive step towards qualification for the 2010 World Cup with a sixth win in six games against lively but limited Kazakhstan. With just Andorra at Wembley before the players hit the holiday beaches – as close to a formality as international football can offer – Fabio Capello’s team can look forward to kicking off next season with a maximum 21 points and a passage to South Africa almost assured. Perhaps there is nothing all that massive about winning in Almaty – England beat the Kazakhs 5-1 at Wembley and Belarus managed a similar scoreline here – but after a long season and an arduous journey, this fixture had all the ingredients for an upset.
